Bemidji High School Athletics: Embracing Change and Looking Ahead

Bemidji High School’s athletic programs are set to join the Central Lakes Conference in the upcoming 2026-27 school year, marking a significant shift for the Lumberjacks. This move will align Bemidji with schools such as Alexandria, Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Rocori, Sartell, Sauk Rapids-Rice, St. Cloud Tech, St. Cloud Apollo, and Willmar. Activities Director Kristen McRae expressed enthusiasm about the transition, noting that both she and the coaches are excited about the opportunities this change will bring.

In other developments, the Bemidji High School football program is undergoing a leadership transition. Head Coach Bryan Stoffel recently announced his resignation, citing ongoing personal attacks and a lack of support. In his statement, Stoffel emphasized his commitment to the program and the student-athletes but highlighted the need to prioritize his family’s well-being. The search for a new head coach is underway, with the goal of providing stability and continued growth for the team.

On a positive note, the Bemidji girls’ hockey team achieved a significant milestone by securing their first state tournament appearance since 2007. The Lumberjacks clinched the Section 8AA title with a 4-1 victory over Moorhead, showcasing the team’s resilience and determination. Junior defenseman Millie Knott contributed to the win with a crucial goal, and the team is now preparing to make a strong showing at the state level.

As Bemidji High School’s athletic programs navigate these changes, the community’s support remains vital. The upcoming conference alignment, leadership transitions, and athletic achievements reflect the dynamic nature of high school sports and the importance of adaptability and community engagement.
