Bemidji is actively working on several projects aimed at improving infrastructure and ensuring community safety.
Highway 197 Corridor Improvements
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is collaborating with local stakeholders to enhance the Highway 197 corridor. After initial proposals faced community opposition, a renewed effort in 2021 led to the formation of a Community Review Panel. This panel spent nearly a year developing a new vision for the corridor, focusing on community-supported, multi-modal improvements to increase safety and vitality for motorists, businesses, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The project aims to address the aging pavement and incorporate features that reflect the community’s needs and preferences.
Street Renewal Projects
In March 2026, the Bemidji City Council awarded the 2026 Street Renewal Project to a local construction company. The project, valued at approximately $1.41 million, includes work on 10th Street NW, 11th Street NW, and Jeannette Avenue NW. Construction is set to begin in May and is expected to be completed by September. This initiative is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve local roadways, ensuring safe and efficient transportation for residents and visitors.
Water Treatment Enhancements
Bemidji has also taken significant steps to ensure the safety of its drinking water. The city constructed a new water treatment facility to address the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) detected in its wells. The facility utilizes granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange resins to effectively remove PFAS contaminants, providing residents with clean and safe drinking water. This proactive approach underscores the city’s commitment to public health and environmental stewardship.
Community Safety Initiatives
The Bemidji Police Department remains dedicated to fostering active partnerships within the community to protect life and property. With a team of 34 licensed peace officers and support staff, the department handles approximately 27,000 calls for service annually. Their mission emphasizes respect, integrity, initiative, and courage, aiming to enhance the safety and quality of life for all community members.
Through these concerted efforts, Bemidji continues to demonstrate its commitment to infrastructure development and community safety, ensuring a thriving environment for its residents.
